Our Australian Missionaries

It is providential that the Australian Missionaries were destined to play a vital role in the health care ministry of JMJs in India.

The second Australian Doctor was Dr. Ethel Pitt who in her early forties arrived in India in 1934 to join the Society of JMJ and her religious name was Sr. Veronica of the Holy Face. She was specialized in “Trachome” worked as resident Medical Officer at the Victoria Eye Hospital at Melbourne. She was the pioneer the newly established St. Philomena’s Hospital, Bangalore. She loved the poor much and worked with great commitment and dedication.

Miss. Margaret Barrett a Pharmaceutical Chemist in her late forties arrived in Guntur, India in 1947 to join the Society. Her religious name was Sr. Peter Julian. Their vocations were something very unique; they had neither acquaintance with one another nor with the Sisters of JMJ Society. They hadn’t any correspondence with the Society when the “Call” came to them to the mission. It is God who gives the “Call” to different individuals in different forms.

The tiny seed that was sown in Guntur nourished with the great love and generosity by the missionaries and no less by the daughters of the soil had grown and branched out to the various parts of the country.
